About Sonar Kella
Though he is widely known for complex, robust explorations of human and social issues, Satyajit Ray also wrote stories and made films for younger audiences. A 1965 publication of the Bengali children’s magazine Sandesh, which Ray edited, saw the debut of one of his most enduring and beloved characters – Feluda, a brilliant but compassionate detective inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Ray adapted this character to the screen with the 1977 classic Sonar Kella (translation: The Golden Fortress). The film is an intriguing yet comic adventure, telling the story of Mukul, a young boy who recalls memories of a previous life where he lived in a shining golden fortress, with Ray’s brilliant detective Feluda investigating the case. Sonar Kella has been widely celebrated for combining elements of mystery, comedy and drama with Ray’s trademark realism.
